A traveller's guide to Britain's industrial infrastructure
Welcome to Powerful Paths, the start of a project encompassing
all the stuff that goes on in the background, from pylons and
power lines to sewage and servers. We'll be out there looking at
the structure of infrastructure and devising ways to get up
close to it all.
A linked series of walks, rides and trails,
available initially on website and blog, shortly after as an
ebook (and you never know, maybe even on actual paper in the
fullness of time) will allow us to look more closely at what
makes Britain tick. We'll take in wonderful engineering feats
and obscure but crucial tunnels, the strange variety of
telecommunications towers and the er, power, of power stations.
No trespassing involved, just walking, riding and looking at the
powerful pathways through our countryside. And that means urban
and rural, in the long literary and visual tradition of gritty
exploration of Britain's industrial fringes.
